For 150 years, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose have carried the light of veritas into classrooms, parishes, neighborhoods, and communities throughout the United States, Mexico, and Germany. What began in 1876 as a small community responding to the needs of immigrant families in California has grown into a vibrant, hope‑filled mission rooted in prayer, study, service, and community life. Throughout these fifteen decades, the Sisters have remained steadfast in their commitment to education, justice, and compassionate presence. Their ministries have touched generations—forming students, accompanying families, advocating for the vulnerable, and nurturing faith wherever the Gospel calls. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we honor the countless Sisters, Associates, partners in mission, benefactors, and friends who have helped the mission flourish. Together, we look with gratitude to the past, with joy to the present, and with courage to the future God continues to unfold.

Celebrating 150 Years: A Three‑Part Journey
This spring, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose welcomed the community to a special three‑part series honoring 150 years of faith, heritage, and mission. Led by Archivist Sister Mary Catherine Antczak, each gathering explored a different chapter of the Congregation’s story.
Beginning the Journey (March 15) — Visitors toured the Mother Pia Room, Heritage Room, and a gallery of the Sisters’ ministries and 66 schools, celebrating the Congregation’s founding years. “Celebrate 150 years… through exhibits in the Mother Pia Room, the Heritage Room, and a gallery highlighting the Sisters’ ministries and 66 schools."
Praying the Journey (April 11) — Guests experienced the beauty and history of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Chapel, including its Dominican art, stained glass, and Schoenstein Pipe Organ. “Visit Queen of the Holy Rosary Chapel—our community’s sacred gathering place…
Surviving the Journey (May 2) — The final session shared the Sisters’ courageous ministry in Mexico during the 1926–1935 religious persecution, through letters and records preserved by Sr. Maria Victoria Hernandez, OP. “Discover the extraordinary chapter of our Sisters’ ministry in Mexico during the 1926–1935 persecution…”
Together, these events offered a moving tribute to 150 years of Dominican life—rooted in truth, shaped by prayer, and strengthened by mission.
