Sister Margaret Anne Burke, O.P., died at San Gabriel Mission Convent, San Gabriel, California, on Sunday, January 20.   She was 73 years old and in the 53rd year of her religious profession.

Born on May 18, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, she graduated from St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Elementary School, Los Angeles, and graduated from St. Michael’s High School, Los Angeles.  She entered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1963. Two years later, June 20, 1965, she made first profession of vows as a Dominican Sister.

Sister Margaret Anne spent her life in the ministry of Catholic education.  She had the distinction of teaching students in all grades, one through eight.  Her ministry was primarily in Southern California where she ministered in Los Angeles at Sacred Heart School, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini School, St. Ignatius School, St. Michael’s School, and Santa Teresita School.  In Orange County she taught at St. Catherine’s Academy, Anaheim, and St. Callistus School, Garden Grove. In Northern California, she taught at St. Anthony’s School, San Francisco.

During her teaching ministry, Sister Margaret Anne earned the deep respect and love of her students as well as the esteem of her colleagues.  She generously served her sisters in community and was frequently asked to assume responsibility as community prioress or treasurer.

Sister Margaret Anne was preceded in death by her father, John Henry Burke, brothers, Michael and Steven Burke, and her brother-in-law, Michael Johnston.  She is survived by her mother, Margaret Smith, her sister Patricia Johnston, her sister-in-law, Linda Burke (Steven), her nieces, Alice Kendall (William), Laura Klepper (Lamont), Shiloh Burke, Shannon Burke, Cassie Burke, nephews Ryan Johnston (Kelly), Shane Burke, James Burke, Timothy Burke, Michael Burke, and numerous cousins and grand nieces and nephews.

On Monday, January 28, at 7:00 pm, Mass for Sister Margaret Anne will be celebrated at San Gabriel Mission Chapel of the Annunciation with a reception following Mass in the parish hall.  San Gabriel Mission is located at 428 S. Mission Drive, San Gabriel, CA 91776.

On Friday, February 1, services will be held at the Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse.  The recitation of the Rosary will be at 3:00 pm, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5:00 pm.  Dinner will be served following Mass; please RSVP to 510-657-2468. The Motherhouse is located at 43326 Mission Circle, Fremont, CA 94539.  Burial will take place on Saturday, February 2, at 7:30 am, at God’s Acre on the grounds of the Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse.
