Help Support Scholarships for Students
In 1876, our foundress Mother Maria Pia Backes said yes to a new mission in California and journeyed west with two companions. Within a week of their San Francisco arrival, three Dominican Sisters were teaching 40 children in their parish school.
Today 7,500 students in California and Mexico are educated across 27 elementary and secondary schools founded or associated with the Sisters. An evening English as a Second Language program serves adults in Oakland and the Dominican Sisters School of Music in Fremont educates Bay Area students. For more information about our schools, click here.
These inner city, urban or suburban schools foster the Dominican values of Prayer, Study, Ministry and Community, yet many families lack the resources to enroll their children. More than 20 years ago we established the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund to help families by distributing nearly $90,000 in annual assistance and supplementing each school’s fund raising efforts.
Will you help us grow this fund so next year we can provide more scholarships? Help us teach today’s youth to Seek the Truth in Love and experience the values of a Dominican education.
