Becoming a Sister - Everything You Need to Know

photo Sister Gloria and Sister Mary

Are you awakening to God’s pull at your heart to follow a religious vocation? It can be overwhelming, scary, and yet exciting and hopeful all at the same time, filled with many questions. The journey can be a time of self-discovery and acceptance to be a self-gift to the world.

Your exploration into becoming a Dominican sister is unique to you and yet universal with others who are also discerning their vocation options to be who God created them to be.

If you are interested, contact me for companioning on your journey.

Discernment

Do you want to be a Catholic religious sister? Do you feel God tugging at your heart? If you are a single, Catholic woman between the ages of 18 to 40, consider spending a weekend with the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Come and learn about religious life!

Steps on the Journey

Alive in God’s mystery, our lives and spirit are nourished by the dynamic interplay of prayer, community, study, and ministry.

We believe all meaningful relationships are rooted in trust: trust in yourself, in your environment, in your community, in your capabilities and most importantly, in your heart. The path to becoming a sister is a sacred journey that requires an open heart.

The journey includes these primary milestones:

  • Candidacy: A beginning lived experience of Dominican life and ministry. You will live in a community and still manage your own expenses. The candidacy process usually lasts a year and will move on to the next step as both parties see fit.
  • Novitiate: Two years of spiritual development, study, growth in understanding, and living our Dominican religious life, including one year at the Dominican Collaborative Novitiate in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • Temporary Profession: A deepening lived commitment of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience through life in community and active ministry prior to perpetual profession.
  • Perpetual Profession: A sister’s sacred and public witness of her vowed commitment to God through the charism and mission of the congregation.
