Initial Formation

Skip Navigation LinksHome > Our Life > Initial Formation

There are two phases in initial formation: candidacy and the novitiate. Candidacy serves as a gradual transition to religious life and lasts from 1-2 years. Candidates receive the Dominican cross at the Rite of Initiation and wear a simple black skirt and a white blouse. The Novitiate is a sacred time to deepen relationship with God, grow in understanding of religious consecration and develop the ability to live the Dominican way of life. Candidates and Novices take classes together in Dominican spirituality, Christology, Theology, Sacraments, Catholic Social Teaching, Mariology, Prayer, Liturgical Music, and Congregational history; they participate in daily Liturgical Prayer and service in a suitable ministry.  In the second year Novices have a period of solitude to contemplate more deeply the commitment of their lives through the profession of chastity, poverty and obedience.

Sister Mary-Han Nguyen

Sister Mary-Han just made first profession in August.  She writes, "Candidacy is the dating time with the Congregation. The candidate has time to learn more about the Congregation, the Sisters and living the religious life as a Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose. She also learns more about herself, her talents, her gifts, and her call to where she is best suited in serving God and others.  Initial formation has been a wonderful experience for me. I found that the sisters are a spiritual, dedicated, joyful, loving and caring group of women who have helped me to find myself, my gifts, and my talents. More importantly, they guided my journey to unfold God’s unconditional loving plan for me. Therefore, I highly recommend that you check us out! Give yourself a chance, and give God a chance to tend your call through the sisters. I have experienced a magnificent time of growth in many dimensions of my life. For sure, you will not waste your time here so don’t be hesitant!"

Candidates meet regularly with their Formation Director and take part in community, study, prayer and part-time ministry with the Congregation. The period of Candidacy is followed by Reception of the Dominican Habit and the white veil of a Novice.
